Doctor Tytus Chałubiński’s Tatra Museum in Zakopane is one of the oldest and largest regional museums in Poland – it comprises 11 museums and art galleries. Historical wooden and brick buildings house permanent and temporary exhibitions presenting Goral (‘Góral’, Polish Highlander) culture, the history of the sub-Tatra region, artworks by artists connected to Zakopane, and the natural environment of the Tatras. The Tatra Museum is connected to the rich and interesting natural and cultural landscape of the sub-Tatra region. The idea of establishing the Tatra Museum was born in 1888 among Tytus Chałubiński’s (1820–1889) friends, who wanted to celebrate his achievements as the discoverer of Zakopane’s value to the world of medicine.. Tytus Chałubiński was a prominent Warsaw doctor, scholar, social activist, and a great enthusiast of the culture of the Tatras and of the Polish Highlanders. To realise this idea, the founders established Doctor Tytus Chałubiński’s Tatra Museum Society. One of the Society’s tasks was to find designs for, funds to build, and ways to develop the museum.
