Nowy Targ is the capital of Podhale and also the largest town in this beautiful region. Few people know, however, that it is also the only place in Poland from which you can simultaneously see as many as four national parks – the Gorce, the Tatra Mountains, Mt Babia and the Pieniny!

One should also not forget that Poland’s oldest anatomically modern human remains were discovered not far from Nowy Targ – in the Obłazowa Cave. The boomerangs found there, dating back to nearly 30,000 BCE, are unique because they were made of mammoth bones, while other known prehistoric boomerangs are wooden.

The town is located on the Wallachian Cultural Route, where pastoral traditions are alive and well. It is also a great starting point for hiking and cycling trips not only to the Gorce Mountains, but also to the Pieniny, the Tatra Mountains and the Mt Babia region. It is also close to the spiritual heart of this land – Ludźmierz – where the Gaździna Podhala has reigned for centuries. You can also go a bit further to explore the ethnographically delightful Spis and Orawa.

Nowy Targ is also a great place to see the Tatra Mountains in all their glory.  It is here that the famous cycling route Around the Tatra Mountains begins, here that one of the oldest nature reserves in Poland is located (the peat bog ‘Bór nad Czerwonem’)where the picturesque wide valleys of the Biały Dunajec, Czarny Dunajec and Dunajec Rivers can be found. All those looking for the most scenic cycling routes in Poland sooner or later must visit Nowy Targ and its surroundings. It only needs to be mentioned that it is here that two beautiful and scenic routes merge: VeloDunajec and the Route around the Tatra Mountains. In winter, ski lifts, ski trails, and well-maintained cross-country skiing trails await tourists.

The Podhale region is also very much associated with the Polish Pope, Saint John Paul II. As the highlanders say, the whole of the Tatra Mountains is sacred – they repeat this to tourists and keep an eye on the trails in Nojwieksy Gazda, remembering Saint John Paul II's repeated request during his lifetime: ‘Watch over these trails for me.’

At the Nowy Targ Tourist Information Point, you can find out all you need to know about the town – as the highlanders simply call it – its immediate surroundings and the region. The Point can be found without any difficulty as it is located in the Town Hallon the Market Square.  There are, of course, free guide book and maps of the city, and for bicycle routes. Attractive guidebooks, mountain maps and beautiful souvenirs are on sale.  The professional staff not only answer all your questions but can also advise you as to what to visit, where to have a hearty meal, and various places where it's possible to stay overnight/

The PIT maintains a website, thanks to which you find out what is worth visiting and gather the most up-to-date information about local events, institutions, health care, car parks, and even petrol stations.

The Nowy Targ Tourist Information Centre operates as part of the Małopolska Tourist Information System.

It is also a Bicycle Friendly Place – MPR
