Kościelisko Tourist region: Tatry i Podhale

The Smocza Jama Cave, whose name refers to the dragon's cave in Krakow, is well worth a visit. It is located at the Kraków Gorge – a magical lane that is a side branch of the Kościeliska Valley, resembling a tunnel that winds between the rocks. For many people, it is one of the most beautiful places in the Western Tatras.
The route to the cave starts behind Hala Pisana in the Kościeliska Valley and leads through the picturesque rocky Kraków Gorge. Only the lower part of the gorge is open to tourists; the upper part is under strict protection. After about 100 metres, the cave widens, and an iron ladder is on the left. You have to climb it to the almost vertical rock where the entrance to the cave is located. From the ladder onwards the trail becomes one-way, and you can no longer turn around. The cave is a 37-metre-long tunnel, punching holes in the ravine wall all the way through. The entrance hole is 17 metres above its bottom, and the exit hole is 12 metres higher. The bottom of the cave is covered with humus remains, it is completely frozen in winter, and there is a typical dynamic microclimate with constant airflow. Chains have been installed along the entire length of the cave, as the passage through it is steep. In front of the entrance hole, a somewhat exposed path, secured with chains and brambles, is led along the left side, allowing you to bypass the cave and walk back to Hala Pisana. Note: It is essential to have a torch, preferably a head torch that does not have to be held with the hands.
