Wadowice is the home town of Karol Wojtyła – Pope John Paul II. Next to the Market Square and the Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Kościelna Street a modest tenement house is located where the future pope was born on 18 May 1920.
The house belonged to Yechiel Balamuth, a Jewish merchant and head of a Jewish commune. Currently, the building houses the Papal Museum – the Family Home of John Paul II in Wadowice. The entire surface – four storeys and a small yard – has been allocated to a multimedia narrative exhibition created by Barbara and Jarosław Kłaput, dedicated to Karol Wojtyła – John Paul II, his life and actions. In the former apartment of the Wojtyła family, pieces of furniture and memorabilia connected with the life and activity of the future pope have been collected: family photos, copies of Karol's school certificates, documents from subsequent stages of his life, as well as skis, a backpack and a kayak paddle that bear witness to his passion for tourism. Visitors can also examine manuscripts of his works, various editions of books about John Paul II from different countries and a collection of photos documenting Pope's visits to Wadowice. The home and the new exhibition were officially opened on 9 April, just before the canonisation of Blessed John Paul II.
